Ken, Myself, Dad [August 26, 2012; Columbus, OH]
So, as many of you know (or have gathered), I’ve been living in my dads’ backyard house for the past ten months. If you had told me when I was 16 or even 22 that I’d be living in Ohio under such circumstances, I would’ve laughed and told you you were crazy. But life does crazy things, and those things bring you to strange places.
The thing is, the past ten months have been wonderful. As a twenty-five-year-old, I never imagined myself living in my parents’ backyard. In fact, I tried to do anything but that. See, giving into life’s problems can be hard, especially as a stubborn-hearted German gal.
Ohio has been strange. It’s been lonely and trying, but also quite wonderful. I never wanted to end up here. But I also never expected to be here, close to a father and his partner, who I never really knew growing up.
I’m just saying that life can be surprising. Being in a place you never wanted to be can be good. Forming relationships with two fathers, who you never really got to know while growing up, can be remarkable.
I’m just really lucky, and eternally grateful. Ohio has been such an incredible place for the past year. And that’s a sentence I never though I’d utter.
So, here’s to life’s continual surprises and wonderful graces.
