This is the new film by Ann Fessler. It’s an addition and follow-up to Fessler’s book, The Girls Who Went Away, which is beautiful and incredibly moving.
Fessler was one of my photo professors at RISD, and I can’t think of many other people who influenced me more. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I think she was a big part of why I started going back to South Dakota to photograph.
This film looks incredible. The book is incredible (you should all read it). And most importantly, the stories told should not be ignored by anyone.
Also, if you ever have the chance to hear/see Ann Fessler speak, do it. She’s just amazing.
